How to auto-reply to Instagram comments with a DM
Replying to every comment by hand is impossible once a reel takes off. The good news is that you can automate both the private DM and the public reply, safely and officially. This tutorial walks through the whole process, from preparing your account to testing your first automation.
Step 1: Switch to a professional account
Automation through the official Instagram API works with professional accounts. In the Instagram app, open Settings, find Account type and tools, and switch to a Business or Creator account if you have not already. Your followers and posts stay the same.
Step 2: Connect your account safely
Sign in to OneSocialX and connect Instagram. You will be taken to Meta's own screen to approve access. You never type your Instagram password into OneSocialX. OneSocialX connects through Meta's official Instagram login and API, so your password is never shared. You can disconnect at any time.
Step 3: Create an automation
Create a new automation and choose where it applies: a single post or reel, or every post on your account. A specific rule is great for a lead magnet reel; an account-wide rule is useful for common requests like "SENDLINK". Automations respond to new comments only, so set them up before you post.
Step 4: Choose a trigger
- Keyword: the DM is sent when a comment includes your keyword, such as GUIDE, anywhere and in any capitalisation. It also matches inside other words, so pick something distinctive. Best for clear calls to action.
- Any comment: everyone who comments gets the DM. Best for giveaways and launches.

Step 5: Write the DM
Write the message the commenter will receive. Thank them, deliver the link on its own line, and invite a reply.

Step 6: Add a public reply (optional)
Turn on the public comment reply and add a short line such as "Sent! Check your DMs 馃摡". It reassures the commenter and shows everyone else that commenting works.
Step 7: Decide on follow-to-unlock (optional)
Switch on follow-to-unlock (available on the Pro plan) if you want people to follow your account before the content is delivered. Existing followers get it straight away. It is a good fit when your content is clearly valuable.
Step 8: Test before you post
Save the automation, then comment the keyword from a second account. Check that the DM arrives, the link opens, and the public reply appears. The activity log shows every comment seen, the DM sent, and why anything was skipped.
Step 9: Tell people the keyword
Say the keyword in your reel, put it on screen, and repeat it in the caption: "Comment GUIDE and I'll DM it to you." Clear instructions lead to more comments.
What to do after it is live
Setting up the automation is only the start. In the first day after posting, check the activity log a couple of times to make sure DMs are going out as expected. Read the replies people send back to your DM and answer them personally; this is where many sales and bookings actually happen.
After a week, review which posts brought the most comments and DMs. Reuse what worked: the same style of hook, a similar resource, or the same keyword. Pause or update automations on older posts if the offer has changed, so nobody receives an out-of-date link.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a long or easy-to-misspell keyword.
- Linking to your home page instead of the exact resource.
- Forgetting to update the link when your offer changes.
- Running two tools on the same post, which can send duplicate DMs.
- Never replying to the people who answer your DM.

Frequently asked questions
Can I auto-reply to comments on old posts?
You can add an automation to any existing post or reel, but it only responds to new comments from then on. Comments already on the post do not trigger it.
Can I auto-reply without sending a DM?
No. A DM is always sent when an automation triggers. The public reply is an optional extra on top of it.
Do I need to keep my phone or computer on?
No. Automations run on our servers, so DMs go out even when you are offline.
Is this allowed by Instagram?
